I know this theater was a huge part of my mother's and father's childhood and youth and young adulthood in Quincy in the 1920's through 1940's. SOOO GLAD it is being restored! Excellent decision. It will be an entertainment draw for the entire region. - Marilyn Irene Keller Rittmeyer

Saturday Matinee Double-Features
I remember that when I was nine or ten years old (1966 or
67), the Washington Theater held a
summer matinee double-feature horror fest and it featured such horror classics
as BILLY THE KID VS DRACULA, BLOOD BATH, ZONTAR THE THING FROM VENUS, CURSE OF
THE SWAMP CREATURE and other fine gems of the cinema. It was like a quarter to get in and it didn’t
matter that these movies weren’t very good (and some were even in black and
white) – they had plenty of scares for a young kid and, armed with a big dill
pickle from the concession stand and sitting in air-conditioning on a hot
summer day was like being in heaven. Of
course, I wanted to see all the movies being shown that summer (what young boy didn’t)
but I only remember seeing one double-feature – THE ROBOT VS THE AZTEC MUMMY and
THE FROZEN DEAD. I recently saw part of “Robot”
on TV. Golly, it was bad, but I still
fondly remember all the matinee movies I got to enjoy at the Washington Theater
as a young man. - Greg Walz, Granite City IL
